It's a special camp in Columbia County for children with special needs. And, it's a way for kids coping with brain injuries to be able to participate in sports activities.
Camp Cranium near Millville is an overnight camp for about 40 children with brain injuries.
For many campers, it's their first time away from their families. Organizers say it's the only camp of its kind in the United States for children with brain injuries. The Morris family traveled from Dickson City.
"Going fishing and eating smores," said Ralphie Morris.
"It was really fun last year and I was so excited to come again this year," said Matthew Morris.
The goal is to give brain injured children, ages 6 through 18, a supportive environment. It's a place where they can meet children who have had similar experiences in their lives. Margie Morris says it's the reason she brings her children year after year.
"But, my oldest son especially, he has to hold back. But, here they can do what ever they want and it gives them confidence and see the good that comes from a bad situation," said Morris.
All workers here are volunteers. This year they have 50 people helping out at the camp. Lexi Geib is the creator and director of Camp Cranium. It's held on the grounds of Camp Victory. It's a facility in Columbia County that welcomes all types of disabled children. Gieb says every child has the chance to participate in different sports activities at Camp Cranium.
"They go back to school and their friends don't treat them the same way. And it's difficult to go back into life the way it use to be. I feel this camp proves a support system and a community for them to feel accepted," said Gieb.
Alex Meleski says he enjoys being around the people.
"You learn new things about people. You get to explain what happened to you, and I do kind of like telling the story," said Meleski.
The camp, now in its second year, has a volunteer staff including doctors, nurses, a psychologist, a special education teacher and therapists. The children will stay overnight at the camp for a whole week.
